Melbourne was founded in 1880, with the downtown district located on Front Street along the Indian River. Mail arrived by boat until the railroad arrived in 1893. A fire in 1919 destroyed many of the Front Street buildings, and the town was rebuilt to the west near the train depot. A wooden bridge was constructed across the Indian River in 1921, which brought increased traffic and prosperity to Downtown Melbourne. Redevelopment and beautification of the Downtown area began in 1980.

The Flat Iron Building was part of the new Melbourne business district that arose out of the ashes of the 1919 fire.
Schoolbus
This old school bus traveled from Valkaria to Melbourne in 1919-1920. The young man with his arm hanging out the window is Harvey Huggins, still living in Melbourne today. Mrs. Ada Carruthers, sister of Mrs. Irene Christen (one of the early known educators in Brevard), says the old school bus had to be filled with a kettle of hot water in cool weather and cranked by hand. Her brother, Wynn, broke his arm cranking it one morning.
